Gottlieb was the first manufacturer of real pinball machines. Before Gottlieb's Humpty Dumpty, pinball machines did not have flippers. The first version of Gottlieb's pinball machines are called System 1. Gottlieb continued to release dozens of pinball machines from the late 1940s until the mid-1990s.

Like other pinball manufacturers, Gottlieb first made mechanical pinball machines, then electromechanical pinball machines starting in 1935, and solid state pinball machines starting in the late 1970s. Gottlieb was bought by Columbia Pictures in 1977.
