Whirlwind Pinball MachineMfr Date: 1989 – Williams Qty Made: Production Model – approximately 12,000 were made. Designer: Pat Lawlor Artwork: John Youssi Reasons We Like This Game: Whirlwind is a classic. It's one of the few games created from an original concept, and not based on a movie, celebrity figure, band etc. Instead, it's based on twisters and hurricanes! And what a fun game it is to play! Whirlwind has a working fan on the backbox that briefly blows air in your face when certain hard shots are made, and stays on even longer during multi-ball! This pinball will keep you busy for a very long time, as it has a fairly deep rule set and loads of great shots! Here's some of the neat things you'll find on Whirlwind: Three flippers, three jet bumpers, four drop targets, THREE rotating spinners, and some really great ramp shots! Designed by Pat Lawlor, (currently working for Stern, and one of the best pinball designers in the world) Whirlwind is an excellent example of some of his best work ever! A challenging game for beginners AND advanced players, Whirlwind is absent of violent themes, so it's perfect for the family environment! Whirlwind features THREE different types of multi-ball play, wonderful artwork, and is such a classic that when Sega Pinball made a pinball game for the 1994 movie "Twister", they copied many of the same design elements and features from Whirlwind! Personally, we think the original is more fun and a better playing game. On a side note, Williams originally produced backglass artwork for Whirlwind that had the little boy wearing a Cubs baseball cap, but they did it without permission. The Cubs found out, and the cap was quickly changed to a "W" before games were shipped, however the original backglass remains a rare collectable all by itself! Special Features: Whirlwind was one of the first pinball games to use animated and motorized objects on top of back boxes (like the fully working fan!). It's also one of the few games with spinning motorized disks on the playfield, and Whirlwind has THREE! (No other game has this many.) (The original Fireball Classic was the first to utilize a spinning disc.) For 1989, this game was way ahead of its time! The game has great artwork by pinball guru John Youssi! The colors are vibrant, and the backglass is beautiful. All in all, Whirlwind is a great game and will always be a players classic!
