Reasons We Like This Game: Spiderman is arguably Stern's best pinball machine built to date. Of course having Steve Ritchie design the game certainly helps!! Steve's is one of the best designers out there, and he's designed some of the best pinball machines of all time including T2&3, High Speed, The Getaway, Black Knight, Star Trek the Next Generation etc.
Kevin O'Connor did the incredible artwork here. His work has been seen in everything from KISS to the latest Pirates of the Caribbean release! His repertoire also includes Monster Bash, Lord of the Rings, Fathom, Medusa, and the list goes on. Some of the most beautiful games of all time are part of his collection! We note that Lyman Sheats did the programming in this game because he is one of the best pinball programmers in history, having done the work on our all time favorites Medieval Madness and Attack from Mars! Wow, it's simply a trifecta of talent put together for this pinball machine!
On to the game! The pinball machine is based on the Spiderman movies... All three of them to be exact! All the characters are there... Sandman, Venom, Doc Octopus, and Green Goblin. Inside the game you'll find plenty to do including fourteen stationary targets, an out hole, three jet bumpers, a spinner, four ball multi-ball action, three ramps, a magnet, and three flippers! There’s lots of different multi ball modes and get this... Over 500 quotation calls!! This is the most speech ever packed into a pinball machine, and also means you’ll hear new quotes every time you play!
The art package is great. From the backbox to the playfield and cabinet - everything is crisp, vibrant and well laid out. Inside the game, some characters move forward and backwards while others move up and down. But that's just the characters... It seems like everything in the game is motorized or moves somehow! Spiderman, like all of Steve Ritchie's pinball machines, is a very well balanced game, with lots of open spaces for speed, and a nice equal balance of left to right hand shots. An overall excellent game!!
Special Features: What is truly amazing in this game is the sheer number of callouts. There is a massive 500+ which means you'll always hear something new from all the characters! And it's not all just from the movie... There's plenty of actual speech and voices of the stars programmed just for this release! While most games only have only 3 or 4 stationary targets this game has a whopping fourteen! The ramps in this game are really well done... Very smooth and they flow nicely... plus there's three of them which is better than average. Ball flow is amazingly fast and smooth, (a traditional hallmark for all of Steve Ritchie's games.) So if you like a fast game, you'll need to keep your eye on the ball because the playfield is wide open and the shots are fast! There's tons of stuff to shoot at and each villain is on it's own motor and moves! The amount of toys are especially abundant in this game and there is a whopping eleven modes to complete before you reach the wizard mode!
Each villain has it's own multi-ball mode which is fun. There are combos within combos within combos... did we mention this is a SIX player game instead of the usual four? Whew, what a great game... and probably the most exciting Spiderman collectable of all time!
